Cynthia Coates and Corey Storey

According to the Kokomo Tribune,  Coates was sentenced in November 2016 to 20 years behind bars following a plea deal brokered just days before she was scheduled to stand trial on a count of murder. Instead, she entered into an agreement pleading guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, a Level 2 felony.

At the time of his death, Story was working as an in-home caregiver to Tommie Hammock Jr., who found his body in his home on Oct. 25, 2014, after Coates, his friend, drove him home from a birthday party, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

Coates was at the party previously, but left to get her car washed. Hammock was noted in the affidavit as saying she returned to the party two hours later, but the car was unwashed. It was suspected she shot Story in that time frame.

Her victim was Corey Storey.
